Today we delved deep into the mind of J. Alfred
Prufrock in the “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” by T.S. Eliot. During our discussion, we narrowed in on
aspects of his personality that we found through the poem. Ultimately, we found that a good majority of
this poem is consumed by his insecurities, self-loathing, pessimism,
depression, tendency to over-analyze situations, procrastination, perfectionism,
and most specifically fear. Discussing
Prufrock in the depth that we did made me realize how much I am actually like
him, whether I care to admit that or not.
I do have a lot of insecurities, I am fearful of life, the
unknown, rejection, and not being perfect.
I do over-analyze situations, I am a perfectionist, and I
often find myself with a one-way ticket to procrastination station. Before reading and analyzing this poem in the
depth that we did, Mrs. Lemon told us that Eliot’s editor told him to write
something real. While I later found out
this comment was directed towards the work he created after this one, I still
feel it rings true in this poem. To me,
this poem is very real. I think it touches
down hard on many battles most, if not all, people fight with themselves on a
regular basis. Do you think this is the
case, or do you disagree? Why or why
not?
